Local microdistilleries
Re: Local microdistilleries
I had some Long Shot White Whiskey last weekend. For some reason it tasted much like tequila.

I'll agree with you there. I had the Dark Horse white whiskey, and I am not a fan at all. Too much like tequila indeed.

The Roasterie has developed an espresso flavored vodka that is produced by Clear 10.
Re: Local microdistilleries
I was able to go on a really nice tour of Dark Horse's operations in Lenexa the other day. Very nice operation. These guys definitely seem like they know what they are doing and are putting a ton of effort into making a great product. The space itself is all incredibly well done and looks great.
It sounds like they still have some equipment needs to get things to where they want to be, but overall have their production process down for their different liquors. It is really amazing how they do just about everything by hand there (bottling, labeling, moving barrels, hand signing each bottle, etc), very much mom and pop shop.
I knew very little about the distillation process going into it so it was quite enlightening to hear the hows and whys for the different liquors they produce.
I don't believe they have a set touring process, but if you just email them and ask I think they will make it work... get some food in your belly prior so you can handle the samples at the end.

Such a handsome structure, even after (and partially because of) 90 years of benign neglect.

It's so sad that the age of making industrial buildings attractive is long gone.

FYI - As I have read on the Twitters, J. Rieger and Co. whiskey will make its public debut tonight at the Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange @9PM. I believe it will be available through the remainder of the weekend before being available statewide.

Had two glasses of J.Rieger Whiskey on the rocks over dinner at Rieger last Saturday. I was very pleasantly surprised, thought it was delicious. Smooth, with a nice subtle hint of sweetness from the Sherry. Nice sipping whiskey - will be buying a bottle soon.

Ah, that makes sense! I didn't know that it had sherry in it but thought it had a cherry flavor when I had it last week. I didn't get the woody smoke flavor that I was expecting. Any plans for a traditional, non-sherry version?rxlexi wrote:Had two glasses of J.Rieger Whiskey on the rocks over dinner at Rieger last Saturday. Absolutely. We just received our first still today. It's a 750 Gallon Vendome that we'll use to make a straight Bourbon and a Straight Rye Whiskey. But you won't see those bottles on shelves for 4-6 years. In the meantime, we've got enough product to keep our Kansas City Whiskey going for quite a while, and we plan on releasing a Gin next, most likely in the Spring.
Re: Local microdistilleries
Great news, really looking forward to sampling all your products.
