Isn't Menards like Home Depot and Lowes?

Hopefully Menards moving into metro KC doesn't cause too many big box retail casualties down the road. Those types of boxes are the most difficult to redevelop. Seems like KC is already pretty saturated with big box home improvement stores.

How about Menards going into the vacant retail at 40 and Noland in Independence or Highway 7 and 40 in Blue Springs or the vacant Kmart in Grandview (rather than building a new store two exits south in Belton).

Why are companies not even considering these types of locations?

It's like a Home Depot or Lowe's meet Walmart. All the hardware/lumber stuff you'd expect there and then a fairly large selection of food and household items.

This is the company that put its expansion plans on hold because they were "afraid" Obamacare would bankrupt them (spoiler alert: they're doing fine).

They aren't considering locations like what you mentioned because their m.o. is to go completely greenfield, build off the road a bit and then sell the land in front of their store off as pad sites. They usually get paid pretty well by city councils and such to do so.

Sounds like a store that I would probably avoid. :)

They also classified themselves as a "small business":

Their 2007 sales were $8 billion.
